Legal ServicesThe Chartered Psychologists and other professionals that are part of John McKeown Associates offer a broad service to the legal profession and the courts in providing expert opinion and reports. CVs of particular consultants are available on request together with the experience of the individual concerned with this type of work. Background details of individual consultants are contained in each of the legal section pages. Where there are more complex issues that overlap between different specialist areas the team provides consultancy support where needed to the individual who may act as a single or joint expert. Informal enquiries are welcome. He has previously been an area Educational Psychologist for two local authorities. John specialises in assessment and advice on Educational, Occupational and Legal matters. He has been Managing Partner of John McKeown Associates since it formed over 20 years ago.
Dr Kate Alexander, Llb M.Phil M.Sc C.Psychol Dr Alexander is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist registered with the British Psychological Society and an associate of JMA. She is a member of staff at the Clermont Child Protection Unit in Brighton. In both these roles, she will assess children, families and adults involved in child protection and child care proceedings. She provides court reports and regularly gives evidence in Court. She has undertaken post-doctoral training in psychoanalysis, narrative therapy and forensic risk assessment. Dr Alexander provides supervision and clinical consultancy for children/adolescents in a local secure and open unit in East Sussex and a secure psychiatric forensic unit in Southeast London. More recently she has been working with professionals caring for Looked After Children and Adopted Children. Additonally she also offers consultancy and assessments of children, adolescents and their parents to a range of television production companies. She specialises in providing assessments of attachment, emotional and behavioural difficulties and mental health.
Nigel Austin, B.A.(Hons), PGCE, M.Ed.Psych., AFBPsS, Chartered Educational Psychologist Educated at London and Sussex Universities, Nigel has some 25 years' experience working as an educational psychologist in local education authorities. His most recent LEA post was as Principal Educational Psychologist for Dorset County Council. He has detailed experience of educational matters covering a wide span of issues affecting children of all ages, their families and schools, as well as adults. He undertakes expert witness work for Educational, Criminal and Compensation legal work.

Dr Stephen Briers, D.Clin.Psychol, Ph.D: Chartered Clinical PsychologistDr Stephen Briers works with a broad range of emotional and behavioural problems in both adults and children. He has a particular interest in trauma and adjustment disorders and prior to joining John McKeown Associates worked in the field of HIV/Psychosexual health within the Health Service. Dr Briers is regularly instructed to prepared reports for forensic, medico-legal and Child Care Proceedings. He is experienced in the assessment and treatment of various aspects of family functioning and has been a resident Psychologist for Little Angels and Teen Angels for the BBC.
Dr Joshua Carritt-Baker MA(Oxon) DClin.Psych: Chartered Clinical PsychologistDr Baker has worked for the NHS since 1996 and in private practice as a Clinical Psycholgist since 2003. He works in an integrative way, drawing on cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic and systemic principles to provide therapy for individuals and couples. He has a particular interest in anxiety problems (phobia, panic, OCD, agroraphobia, social phobia,relationship, couple and interpersonal difficulties, psychosis and derpersonalisation/derealisation, chronic fatigue/ME, and sports psychology.He also acts as an expert witness in legal cases.
Richard Maddicks BSc (Hons), Doc.Clin.Psychol: Chartered Clinical Psychologist, Consultant NeuropsychologistDr Richard Maddicks obtained his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Salomons Centre in October 1996 and has 8 years specialist experience in adult neuropsychology. He has been chartered by the BPS since qualification and completed the Institute of Psychiatry diploma in Neuropsychology in 1999. His experience in adult neuropsychology includes both assessment and treatment/rehabilitation of a broad range of neurological conditions e.g. traumatic brain injury, stroke, anoxic brain injury etc. and he has published research in the treatment of neglect following stroke. He has experience of medico-legal reporting and has appeared in court as an expert witness.
Frankie McLean, BSc, MSc, Chartered Clinical PsychologistFrankie McLean worked in the NHS between 1995 and 2003 and in private practice since 2000. Her specialist area is children and families with a particular interest in childhood trauma. She undertakes expert witness work for care proceedings, contact proceedings and compensation claims. She works therapeutically with children and their families using behavioural, systemic and psychodynamic principles.
John Revell, BA (Hons), MBA, Dip Clin Psychol, Dip Couns: Chartered Clinical Psychologist After completing his degree in Psychology at Sussex University, John completed his professional training as a Clinical Psychologist in 1987. He also has a counselling qualification. He has experience of working as a Clinical Psychologist at Consultant level in the NHS. Having more recently obtained a Masters in Business Administration at Brighton University, John has a special interest in organisational consultancy and training. He has experience of medico-legal reporting and has appeared in court as an expert witness.
Dr Andrea Shortland, Chartered Clinical and Forensic Psychologist.Dr Shortland has worked in a variety of voluntary and statutory organisations. She has worked as a forensic psychologist within the prison service managing the delivery of CBT groups for adult offenders and carrying out complex assessments, specialising in risk of violent and sexual offending and assessing change/therapeutic outcomes. She has also provided assessment and therapuetic services for adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties within an inpatient adult setting. Dr Shortland currently offers psychological assessment and therapeutic services to young people and their carers within the looked after system. In her work with John McKeown Associates, Dr Shortland offers assessments and therapeutic work to adults, families and young people. She specialises in child and family assessments including parenting and attachment assessments, risk assessments including the risk of sexual or violent offending within the family, and mental health assessments for young people. Dr Shortland has particular interests within the areas of looked after children, trauma and neglect, attachment, psychosis, family and systemic work, multi-disciplinary working, sexual offending and risk assessment.
Dr Esmoreit Sleyster, Ph.D, C.Psychol,Clinical Child PsychologistEducated in the Netherlands and at the Tavistock Clinic in London, Dr Sleyster has extensive experience working for the NHS as a Clinical Child Psychologist, and has been in private practice on a part-time basis for some years. She has worked with pre-schoolers and school-aged children, on an individual basis, in groups and with them and their parents and families. Esmoreit has developed expertise in working with a wide range of complex childhood and adolescent problems like pervasive developmental disorders, attachment disorders resulting from neglect and abuse, and with emotional and behavioural disorders. Esmoreit describes her therapeutic style as 'integrative': informed by systemic and psychodynamic thinking, as well as deploying cognitive-behavioural and solution-focused brief psychotherapy techniques. Over the last 6 years Esmoreit has specialised in working with children in the care of the Local Authority. She has experience in the assessment of atachments and parenting, and in undertaking assessments for the purpose of care proceedings. Esmoreit joined John McKeown Associates at the end of 2005 as an Expert Witness.
